We believe that this statue is a prototype for a proposed series of busts that would have been made of plastic. We already know that the company (Petito Studios) issued plastic candy containers in the late 40's/early 50's of Jackie Robinson and Ted Williams. This prototype are similar in size and styling. Our research found an article in the July 1949 issue of Baseball Digest detailing this proposed series. The article is titled "Braves Busting Out all Over" and it states that artist Albert Petito was sculpting plaster busts of Boston Braves players which would eventually be made in plastic. The intent was to sell the plastic versions in souvenir stands in the stadium - an idea that we believe never came to fruition.

This bust is of Alvin Dark. Several years ago we offered a similar Dark statue- but he was shown as a Boston Brave. This one depicts dark as a N.Y. Giant (we have never seen this variation). It measures about 5" tall and has his name embossed on the base. The company name is also embossed on the back base of the bust. It does have some wear, but is till in excellent condition. A must have for any figural collector.
